What to Do After a Car Accident
What to Do After a Car Accident
Have you been involved in a car accident, or are you wondering what to do if you’re ever in that situation? The time after the accident is very crucial for determining your state of health and gathering information to deal with the effects of the accident.
First, you want to stop the car immediately and make sure you are close to the collision site, but out of the way of traffic. Make sure to turn on your hazard lights.
Next, check the drivers and passengers of your vehicle and others involved for injuries and call 911. Report the collision, the location, and any injuries. Do not move an injured person unless necessary.
Remain at the collision site until the police arrive. Tell the officer how the collision occurred, but do not admit responsibility.
Collect the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all drivers, passengers, and witnesses and make notes of the circumstances. Take photos of the vehicles involved, your injuries, the other driver’s ID and insurance cards.
Do not leave the collision scene until you’ve collected all of this information, made sure you do not have any substantial injuries, and until the officer allows you to leave.
After you leave the scene, report the collision to proper authorities and insurance companies as soon as possible. Consult a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
Even a seemingly minor car accident can put tremendous forces on the body, resulting in injury. The effects of the injuries may take some time to manifest, so it’s very important to be examined soon after the accident to determine how the collision impacted the body.
